I just love Campbell’s Soup old school print ads. They were always simple, elegant, informative, and made ya wanna eat/drink the soup!

Even the U.S. Government has a “copywriting” division. They got so filled with jargon and buzzwords that it caused huge confusion between departments, even deadly accidents.

So they formed the “Plain Language” movement in 1994.

It laid out ways of clearly showing information without a bunch of “Gobbledygook”

For example they show using “plain language” to avoid word clutter:

BEFORE
When the process of freeing a vehicle that has been stuck results in ruts or holes, the operator will fill the rut or hole created by such activity before removing the vehicle from the immediate area.

AFTER
If you make a hole while freeing a stuck vehicle, you must fill the hole before you drive away.

Or here’s a great example of how they tell people to use less water:

use less water plain englishHere’s the common tools the U.S. Government recommends to make things “Plain Language

Headings: Clearly explain something in one heading.

Bullet Lists: Can make large amounts of text into easy to read bullet points.

Illustrations: Some things are easier to convey with an image.

Q&A Formats: Make an easy FAQ section.

Save so much time fiddling with PDF’s by using a Google Doc instead.

You can make a great looking PDF out of a Google Doc without having to use clunky Adobe Acrobat!

Step 1.) Make a Google Doc
Step 2.) File → Download As PDF
Step 3.) That’s it!

Great for using as lead magnets, sending official documents, or easily creating invoices.

Just as a random fun project I made a cigar box with some scrap wood and an old handsaw 😎

cigar box project 2
Someone gave me some nice cigars, and I had no place to store them, so went to the garage for some scrap wood:

Some super glue and silicone sealant to hold the thing together (in retrospect silicone is probably not a good option for this):

The finished product!

The Facebook Ads Library is a goldmine for finding Facebook & Instagram ads of competitors or companies you like:

  • Find active and inactive ads run across FB
  • Find all political ads and trace source
  • Find specific company ads

You can see all sorts of information on each ad:

Let’s say I wanna spy on TheHustle and see what they’re doing with Ads.
Just search for their name in Facebook Ads Library and you can see the ads they run:

hustle ads ran

Or let’s say I want to research “copywriting” and see what people are offering.

I just search the term ‘copywriting’ and all matching ads come up!

You can sort of see what services and products are being pushed, and how long the ads have been active.

The longer active = works better!

Or if I’m selling “dog leashes” maybe I can scope out what the competitors are doing??

dog leashes facebook ads

I can see from these dog leash ads:

  • Some use product feature images.
  • Some use “testimonial style” ads.
  • Some shoe “in action” videos.

All of these are great ideas!

Give Facebook Ads Library a browse….it’s like having a swipe file of every ad run on the largest network on Earth!

Here’s an easy method I love for figuring out which area of life to focus on:

Sometimes people try to focus on too many thing, so this helps narrow it down.

Hope you enjoyed these little tidbits, have a happy Friday 🙂
